Why a will is essential for military personnel — and how members get one free
Military personnel face a unique combination of factors that make a will especially urgent: operational risk, the possibility of an unmarried partner receiving nothing under intestacy rules, overseas assets, children’s guardianship, and the AFCS nomination that sits completely outside your estate. Without a valid will, your estate passes under intestacy rules — which may not protect the people you most want to protect.

Support services, charities and crisis contacts for the military community
Mental health is one of the most significant challenges facing the armed forces community. Rates of PTSD, depression, anxiety and substance misuse are higher among veterans than the general population, and the transition from service to civilian life is a particularly vulnerable period. Asking for help is not weakness — and the military community has access to some of the best specialist mental health provision in the country.
If you are in immediate danger, call 999. For urgent mental health support, call the Samaritans on 116 123 (free, 24hrs, no call-back needed). For veterans in crisis, Combat Stress: 0800 138 1619 (24hrs).
Serving personnel should also speak to their chain of command, unit medical officer, welfare officer or chaplain as a first step. These are there to help and will not negatively affect your service record if you raise mental health concerns.
Specialist military travel insurance and the Travel Concierge service
Standard travel insurance is not designed for military life. Policies routinely exclude claims arising from orders, postings, or high-risk destinations — leaving serving personnel either uninsured or significantly underinsured when it matters most. Serving personnel may be entitled to operational allowances, Local Overseas Allowance (LOA), the Forces Railcard, childcare vouchers, school fees assistance, Forces Help to Buy, and various concessions and discounts. The MOD’s Discover My Benefits portal provides a regularly updated personalised overview. Veterans may additionally be eligible for AFIP, Veterans UK payments, and grants from charities including the Royal British Legion and SSAFA. Yes, completely. Every article, resource and external link in the Community Hub is free to access for anyone — you do not need to be a member. The additional member services (Travel Concierge, Free Will, Prize Draw, £200 Mortgage Cash Back, Discount Codes) do require free membership, which takes under two minutes to register at staging.absolutemilitary.co.uk/register.
The first step for serving regular personnel is to speak to your chain of command, unit medical officer, welfare officer or chaplain. These are confidential routes that exist specifically to help — using them will not negatively affect your service. For veterans, Op COURAGE (0300 365 2000, option 4) is the NHS specialist service. For anyone in immediate crisis, the Samaritans (116 123) are available 24 hours a day, free, with no referral needed.
